Renovation: Grace to House of Grace

House of Grace has recently undergone an extensive renovation of its exterior and interior rooms. The renovation was necessary as the building has been suffering severe decay. Since it was last renovated 26 years ago by Kamil Shehade House of Grace became one of the most important cultural and worship centers in Haifa.

House of Grace is the official social welfare center of the Melkite Catholic Church and that serves the poor community which surrounds the church as well as the needy of Galilee. The center and church, dedicated to our Holy Mother, serves the ecumenical unity of the Church, a promoter of peace, and an active member of the International Prisoners Fellowship. Originally built in 1862 the Madonna Church is the first place of worship for the Melkite Christian community in Haifa. In the year 1982, Kamil and Agnes Shehade raised the banner of the House of Grace as a social institute with a slogan of "A Warm Home" for prisoners who were rejected by the community at first, and soon after the house became home for the homeless, those who need warmth and love, the needy and poor. The renovation of the Church and construction of the center demanded great dedication and efforts, and soon after, the Haifa Christian community celebrated once again its greatest symbols of strong faith that overcame all hardships, and a new oasis of hope for all Haifa community. In addition, the Madonna Church is the resting place for two very important religious figures, late Bishop Grogorious Hajjar, Bishop of the Arabs and Christ of the East, and late Bishop Maximus Sallum, becoming by that an important station on pilgrims' maps. At present, hundreds gather in the Madonna Church to celebrate private and the major Christian celebrations throughout the year.

The renovation, which already started in 2006, came to stop and repair the old building's decay which soon started jeopardizing the safety of the historical building and the people using it. The first stage that took place in 2006 dealt with the electric infrastructure to the demands of safety regulations of the Israeli Electric Company and the urging need for a stable electrical infrastructure. Recently, with the help of our local community and friend organizations, ERZBISTUM KOLN, O.S.S., Church in Need, Missio and S.H.L.V through Secretariat of Solidarity, we could go into the second phase and restore the grace and safety to our dear Church and home.
